Overview
The
Southern Africa Sustainable Use Specialist Group (SASUSG)
was founded as part of the World Conservation Union
(IUCN)’s Species Survival Commission (SSC) and
global Sustainable Use Specialist Group (SUSG). SASUSG
is well known in these networks for its extensive expertise,
and for being one of SSC’s most active groups.
Membership is voluntary, diverse and extensive, and
is invaluable to the advancement of sustainable use
in the region. Members are drawn from throughout the
Southern Africa region, and include social and environmental
specialists, economists, and key government officials.
The common characteristic of the group is the promotion
of the philosophy that landholders should be the primary
beneficiaries of biodiversity conservation, and that
conservation is an important component of, and contributor
to, livelihood and economic strategies. SASUSG's strength
lies in its 40 dedicated volunteers from across the
region, many of whom have played key roles in the Southern
Africa crucible of conservation innovation.
